Thallus to 5–10 cm wide, adnate, smooth, appearing hard and glossy, grey to yellowish grey, without paler or raised areas, to 0.5 mm thick; isidia absent; globose granules common, to 0.3 mm wide. Prothallus usually distinct, byssoid, whitish. Photobiont cells solitary or a few cells aggregated, 8–17 × 5–12 μm. Medulla distinct, white. Ascigerous parts rare, immersed in the medulla. Asci solitary, flaccid, filled only with cytoplasm, 45–75 × 17–45 μm. Ascospores and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, C+ red, KC+ red, P–, UV+ pale grey-white; containing gyrophoric acid (major), lecanoric acid (minor), ovoic acid (minor), norstictic acid (minor). |
